This course is given by David MH Lambert, DDS – a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, former clinical pharmacist, and chief informatics officer of CE Dojo. This 2 hour continuing education course covers strategies for procedural sedation for practitioners who do not possess a sedation permit or for those who have chosen to forgo maintaining their DEA permit necessary for controlled substance prescribing. The course will introduce the attendee to the use of clonidine – alone or in combination with other more traditional agents – its history, pharmacology, indications, unique properties, and considerable margin-of-safety.

Great info.

Easy to digest and practical for Monday morning. I’m moderate sedation certified and my associate is not. We have bother used clonidine in the past but will be using more.

Thank you for the review. When used in combination with a benzo (I prefer alprazolam) this drug combo produces pre-op anxiolysis and sedation. When supplemented with N2O/O2 hypnosis can be achieved. When combined with a standard TIVA technique overall doses are decreased when titrated to the desired endpoint resulting in faster recovery and overall a more smoother level of anesthesia. Because of sympathetic down regulation patients are calmer and rarely does the patient develop shivering.

When used judiciously and carefully this is a great adjunct.

An Alternative Sedation Approach

I enjoyed learning the benefits of using Clonidine as an alternative substance for providing anxiolysis and sedation to patients. I now have another method for managing apprehensive patients.

Thank you very much for your comments Dr Simpson – and your 5-star review. Clonidine is a great option for your arsenal – especially for those middle-aged “white coat hypertension” types we all see in our office!
