Early Checkout – Moral Injury II

For the next in our series of literary installments on moral injury, Jenny Byrne MD PhD highlights it’s ever expanding nature in healthcare, which is driving many providers to retire early, often in their 50s. Providers face mounting student debt, lower-than-expected salaries, and systemic issues that strip them of autonomy, respect, and pride in their work. This is leading to a scarcity mindset among clinicians, prompting them to prioritize financial security and plan for early retirement. The loss of seasoned healthcare clinicians in their 50s and 60s has serious societal consequences, depriving the healthcare system of experienced leaders who could address systemic inequities and mentor younger generations. Dr Byrne warns that without addressing moral injury, healthcare professions risk losing not only current physicians but also discouraging future ones, creating a dire situation for society’s needs.
