Is It Really Burnout?

For as much as we in dentistry are told “burnout” is THE underlying mental health problem within our ranks – is it possible that’s really an oversimplification? Our medical colleagues have developed a deeper understanding into the drivers of dissatisfaction in the healthcare industry – is it really burnout or is it moral injury?

In this first of an 11 part series, Dr. Jennie Byrne, MD, PhD explores in her article “Moral Injury I” the concept of moral injury, particularly within the healthcare sector. She defines moral injury as the psychological distress experienced when one’s actions, or lack thereof, conflict with personal moral or ethical beliefs. Dr. Byrne highlights that healthcare professionals often face situations where systemic constraints prevent them from providing optimal patient care, leading to feelings of guilt, shame, and betrayal. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing and addressing moral injury to maintain the well-being of healthcare workers and ensure the delivery of compassionate care.
