In 2023 Beth Wood, the North Carolina State Auditor, initiated an audit of the North Carolina Medical Board (NCMB) that revealed significant issues in the board’s oversight of physician misconduct, including obstruction of access to investigation records. This raised concerns about the board’s effectiveness in protecting the public. Subsequently, Wood faced accusations of misusing state-owned vehicles for personal errands, leading to an investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). Following these allegations, Wood announced her resignation after 30 years of service, effective December 15, 2023. Following her resignation, no further action was taken on the NCMB audit.
